Which straighteners to choose?
With so many hair straighteners on the market varying in price from anything around £20 to over £100, deciding on which pair to buy can be difficult. Whether you choose the budget option or opt for a higher end pair should depend on your hair type and the frequency with which you use your straighteners.
If your hair is in good condition and quite thick then you probably don’t need to fork out for an expensive pair. If your hair is fine and straight it might be advisable to go for a more expensive option.
The budget end straighteners usually come with metal plates rather than ceramic plates and microscopically this surface is quite rough, meaning that over time, with repeated use this surface will eventually damage your hair. If you are only using straighteners occasionally and your hair is already in good condition then opting for the budget range is fine.
The higher end straighteners have ceramic plates (or sometimes titanium) and are microscopically much smoother, heating to a higher temperature to ensure that they flatten the hair more effectively. Ceramic plates have a more even heat distribution across the plates’ surface, they heat the plate to a more even temperature and are less likely to frazzle your hair. Ceramic plates heat up and cool down quickly and the temperature can be controlled better.
If you intend to use your straighteners on a regular basis you should think about using hair oils to protect your hair and replace the oils that can be lost. You should also consider straighteners that employ infrared and ionic technologies which add moisture to your hair and then seal that moisture in.
